Hisense Broadband Multimedia Technology (HBMT) is a global leader in the development and manufacture of broadband multimedia consumer electronics subscriber terminal equipment. HBMT began operations in 2003 as the set top box business unit within the Hisense Electric Company (HEC) the division of Hisense that produces flat panel television receivers. Ligent Photonics and Hisense Optoelectronics, a joint venture created by Hisense, was established in 2002. In 2008 the set top box business unit of HEC and Ligent Photonics merged to form HBMT. The mission is to design, develop, manufacture, market and distribute optical communications modules and broadband multimedia subscriber terminal equipment. The product portfolio incorporates optical transceivers, consumer electronic products for passive optical networks, power line modems and set top box products for home gateway, CATV, SATV, IPTV and digital multimedia applications.

HBMT is supported by the large-scale manufacturing capability and resources of its parent company and is rapidly becoming a key global supplier in the optical communications and home networking industries. The management team consists of experienced leaders from the consumer electronics, telecommunications, semiconductor and investment banking industries. The highly skilled technical team comprises 6 Ph.D.’s, 50 Master’s and more than 100 engineers holding the Bachelor’s degree. The expertise covers a broad spectrum of knowledge in circuit design, optical components, software and complex networking equipment. The first class optical communication laboratories incorporate sophisticated hardware & software design tools, which are supported by state-of-the-art 2.5 Gb/sec and 10 Gb/sec optical communication test systems. Several engineers and scientists have been awarded tens of patents related to optical communications.　 High-end optical communication products are developed according to specific customer requirements and designed to comply with International standards. The R&D team’s leadership position is enhanced by experts in the field of digital STB, IPTV system products and PLC (power line carrier) terminal equipment with strategic skill sets in the fields of video home gateway and digital multimedia terminals. The HD STB, Interactive STB, IPTV products are designed to be compatible with global CATV systems and video coding standards. The PLC modem products are designed to produce low EMI/RFI levels as required by International standards, incorporate high-speed interfaces and are intended for user-friendly indoor Internet surfing.

HBMT operates a 10Gb/sec and four 2.5 Gb/sec optical communication transceiver production lines resulting in a total monthly production capacity of more than 80k units. The HBMT STB and PLC production lines leverage the HEC capacity to manufacture more than 10 million products annually.

HBMT embraces the ISO9000 management system and passed the ISO9000 quality audit in November 2003. Its products conform to industrial and international standards.  Most of the products have passed UL and FCC requirements and have been granted the corresponding certificates issued by those agencies. In September 2007 HBMT was granted the Chinese Military Product Certificate, which enables the development, manufacture and sale of optoelectronics transceivers for space applications.
